(For context, this is only my second negative review ever) We asked Gem Solar to install an Air Source Heat Pump 11 months ago. His quote was competitive and his initial visit was great: as the engineer (rather than a salesman) he was able to give seemingly well-founded advice, with plentiful facts, figures and technical details. The good experience ended there. We've since found out that supplier Mitsubishi Electric had quietly stopped taking orders for the (dual heat exchange) water tank required for our system shortly after we placed our order but when we actually managed to get hold of Steve, he kept telling us to hold on for it. He promised to look into alternatives on several occasions, but never got back to us. Steve is a competent and likeable guy but I think he's been super busy with solar panel installations and he's not had the decency to suggest we go elsewhere. It appears that he just doesn't prioritise customers waiting on back orders, ie: we were not kept up to date and no effort was made to chase our order with the supplier, and promises to come up with alternatives were not acted on. His customer service to me has not been great - he's kept us hanging on for almost a year only for it to fall through. I only found out by calling Mitsubishi Electric directly. On this basis, I would not use Steve Menadue, T/A Gem Solar again.

Don't believe the claims and self promotion written on their website. The reality is very different. They didn't reply to my initial email so followed with a telephone call. The person I spoke to was blunt, borderline rude. Without going into too much detail, I already own a heat pump that requires commissioning. An easy job for an experienced heat pump engineer. The person I spoke to tried to tell me how different brands of heat pump vary in complexity and that they couldn't do the job. A disconcerting excuse and one which totally contradicts the claims on their website. Truth is, because I have no requirement for the MCS Renewable Heat Incentive, this company don't want to assist and would prefer to take jobs with easy government money. Pretty shameful really. The irony is once the RHI ends next year, companies like this will be desperate for work. Notice how this company, like others, have jumped from Solar PV to Heat pumps following the government subsidies.

Gem installed solar panels on my house about a year and a half ago. Out of a number of people who came to quote they were by far the most honest and knowledgeable and there was no 'hard sell'... The install was quick and well done and i have had no problems since.. I definately would use them again..

Steve and his team have worked with me on two projects, one off grid and one grid tied. Their knowledge, workmanship and advice was second to none. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

We are MCS‑certified and registered with an approved consumer protection/competent person scheme, which is essential for quality assurance and to access grants like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).
We carry out a detailed home assessment, including property type, insulation levels, existing heating system and available outdoor space, to confirm whether a heat pump is a good fit.
We design the system using a heat‑loss calculation for your home, then match the correct kW size and model (for example, air‑source vs ground‑source) so it runs efficiently and reliably.
Our fixed quote clearly lists the heat pump, cylinder, controls, labour, scaffolding (if needed), electrical work and any radiator or pipework upgrades, so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
Yes, as an MCS installer we can confirm your eligibility, apply for the BUS grant (worth up to £7,500) on your behalf and deduct it directly from your quote.
A typical air‑source heat pump installation takes around 2–5 days, and we’ll agree locations for the indoor and outdoor units, manage any planning considerations and keep you informed each day.
After the heat‑loss survey, we’ll advise if any radiators, pipework, electrics or hot‑water cylinder need upgrading so the system can run efficiently at lower flow temperatures.
Modern heat pumps are designed to be quiet and must meet UK noise regulations; we’ll position the unit to minimise any impact on you and your neighbours and comply with local planning rules.
You’ll get manufacturer warranties on the heat pump plus our workmanship guarantee, and we offer ongoing servicing and support to keep your system performing at its best.
We’ll estimate your likely annual running costs and potential savings based on your current fuel type, insulation level and tariffs, using real‑world performance data rather than lab figures.
